ABOUT HEAL

H.E.A.L. began in 2005 out of a need to develop a support structure for both recovering addicts and their supporters. H.E.A.L. is a non-profit Public Benefit Organisation that promotes a new life to its members through its actions and its dedication to running according to Christian principles and to bring you back to the life God had intended for you.

Anyone may however join H.E.A.L. on the understanding that the recovery of our members is our top priority.

alt

H.E.A.L. focuses on family unity by reconciling family relationships, training and equipping families to interact and to fight addiction together through a support structure for both the recovering addict and the supporter. H.E.A.L. also focuses on educating both the recovering addict and supporter on the principles of recovery and assists in applying these principles to create a culture of recovery which has been developed over many years of collective knowledge and experience.

Our doors are open to all persons regardless of whether they are still in active addiction, but within strict boundaries for the safety of the group. (Right of admission reserved.)

Please note that H.E.A.L. is an open group where people speak from their own experiences. Our H.E.A.L. facilitators have a wealth of knowledge and uphold the H.E.A.L. structure and group protocol in our group meetings; however they are not professionally qualified. Therefore H.E.A.L. cannot be held responsible nor liable for anything that may be said or heard.

H.E.A.L. has relationships with many reliable registered rehabs situated in and around South Africa and H.E.A.L. is referred to by these treatment facilities for after care support and on-going accountability.

H.E.A.L. stands for:

Healing and Educating Addicted Lives.

The name in itself is a testimony of a profound revelation from God to us which came about through an answer to prayer. Anyone may join H.E.A.L.

H.E.A.L. is founded on Christian principles taken from the Bible that give us the tools and direction to live a clean and healthy life free from all bondage. Our understanding of a culture of Recovery has been developed over many years of collective knowledge and experience.

H.E.A.L. works best when the family unit is working together and are trying to reach the same goals. Everyone attending HEAL is there for themselves and their own recovery from the effects of addiction whether it is drugs, alcohol, gambling, sexual or any other related dis-order.

MEETINGS

H.E.A.L. has a vision to open safe meetings across the nations that will bring healing and education to both recovering addicts and their families. All our facilitators speak from their own experience, having had a loved one caught in addiction and/or having walked this road using substances themselves. However We train and equip all our facilitators to correctly run the groups based on creating a safe and structured meeting that teaches recovery, its principles and offers support to anyone suffering with addiction, be it personal or within the family.

Our groups are very interactive and therapeutic, designed to bring self awareness and accountability.

FORMAT OF MEETINGS

Meetings are held weekly for both the supporters and the recovering addicts. Supporters and recovering addicts meet in separate function rooms except for general meetings which are held regularly.

General meetings are when both the supporters and recovering addicts are combined in one meeting in order to ensure unity and to address any concerns supporters or recovering addicts have with each other under the guidance and support of the group.

H.E.A.L. has found these meetings to have lasting impact and are crucial in ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

We give regular lectures for both recovering addicts and supporters, which take place during the first half of the meeting. These lectures are designed to create understanding of both addiction and recovery and to ensure that the principles of recovery are understood.

Supporters often have a teaching session during the first half of their meeting designed especially for supporters in order to help them with their own recovery and from the effects of someone else's addiction.

Regular recorded drug testing is done at meetings in order to maintain accountability and safety.

FOR THE ADDICT

H.E.A.L. will do everything in our power to help by giving guidance and direction to enable you to find the best possible way into your recovery. H.E.A.L. will educate you on the principles of recovery and assist you on how to apply these principles to your life. There is no condemnation or criticism at H.E.A.L.

H.E.A.L. will help each recovering addict to develop and implement a personalized relapse prevention plan that will direct their lifestyle towards a full recovery. H.E.A.L. promotes recovery that is life changing.

Most addictions follow similar paths all ending in devastation and destruction. Addiction is progressive and without intervention will have serious consequences. No matter what stage of addiction or related disorder you are in, now is the time to put a stop to it. If you are using or abusing any mind altering substances or are experiencing any obsessive behaviours, you either have a problem or are close to developing a problem.

Recovery is not as difficult as the world and its statistics make it out to be. It is possible to recover from any addiction as long as you are willing to surrender to the process of recovery. Recovery becomes a lifestyle of endless joy and success, you have nothing to lose by turning your life around and everything to gain.

If you are already in recovery, you should know that you need to do whatever it takes to remain there. H.E.A.L. is a platform for you to gain guidance and direction to ensure that you stay on track and live to your full potential. You may also be able to help those still suffering by sharing your own experiences. You are all welcome no matter what your circumstances.

FOR THE SUPPORTER

Supporters are seen as a crucial element to recovery and as such need to be educated regarding aspects of addiction and recovery. They also need to know and understand what their part in the recovery process is and how best to assist in that process.

FOR THE SUPPORTER

H.E.A.L. definitely focuses on family unity and participation and as such pays a lot of attention to the supporters themselves. We have separate meetings for the supporters and recovering addicts and regularly combine the meetings, as this helps both the recovering addict and supporter understand each others' roles and perceptions.

H.E.A.L. firmly believes that while the recovering addict is getting treatment the family needs to find their own healing and recovery and in the process become educated in how to help the recovering addict maintain their recovery. The support group acts as a platform for restoration from the devastation caused by someone else's addiction and offers constant support throughout the process.

H.E.A.L. believes in eliminating stress and tension by mediating family disputes and helps to empower supporters to gain back their voice lost through years of manipulation and abuse.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND

It is crucial that every recovering addict become accountable to not only a support group but also to his/ her primary supporters (Family members). Recovery is based on honesty, open-mindedness and willingness. In order to maintain recovery the addict needs to apply these principles to his/her recovery. Recovery becomes easier for all individuals of the family if as a whole they are all committed to the process.

As you may know, manipulation is a key tool of any addict. In order to break the manipulation it helps that the recovering addict knows that the supporters also have a support structure that will help them identify and prevent any forms of manipulation. Recovery has a better chance of success if the entire family unit is working together in the same direction..

In order to ensure that you as the supporter get the same information and guidance as the recovering addict and that you are aware of and understand the principles the recovering addict needs to live by, it is crucial that you attend the H.E.A.L. meetings.

  • I was shocked to see how many people and of all walks attended. Everybody had freedom to express themselves. No one judged or criticized me. I cried for almost a year and didn’t care if anyone thought my tears were due to my husband. It was a way of my healing from the broken trust, hurt, anger and fear of the ‘what ifs’ and not knowing what to do. Attending these support meetings gave me hope and comfort. SUPPORTER TESTIMONIALS

Judi, This is my story:
  • My name is Judi and I am a wife to a recovering crack-cocaine addict & mother of 3. When my husband left SCRC and later started setting up HEAL support groups I was not in the least interested. He took the drugs not me, so why should I help or attend these meetings! He was healed or fixed as they say and he had my ‘support’ in that I was the "good wife" that continued with him on his journey. I never realised that my life had become all about him. After a year I was compelled to attend a HEAL meeting as I wanted to hear how other people coped with their loved ones coming out of rehab. I was shocked to see how many people and of all walks attended. Everybody had freedom to express themselves. No one judged or criticized me. I cried for almost a year and didn’t care if anyone thought my tears where due to my husband. It was a way of my healing from the broken trust, hurt, anger and fear of the ‘what ifs’ and not knowing what to do. Attending these support meetings gave me hope and comfort. I learned new skills like implementing boundaries for myself and finding my voice again. Through hearing so many testimonies, I discovered Jesus Christ to be real and ever present in my everyday situations & I regained new found strength and self-worth. The love and support from like-minded people in these groups became a much needed anchor through a very traumatic stage of my life. For any one suffering from the consequences of addiction, attendance to support meetings are non-negotiable! For me HEAL has been life changing and empowering.

Peter Steyn, This is my story:

Early Days

I was informed of Garrick’s addiction 15 years ago, when he was caught breaking into my father in laws holiday flat. He and a friend stole the TV and pots which they sold to feed their addiction. How could this happen to me, never ever thought that the affect on me would be hurt, sadness, shame and at times devastating. Garrick after all was growing up and I thought that his argumentative ways, dress code and tattoos were part of the way youth behaved and that he would grow out of this behaviour

Started blaming myself, what did I do wrong, what could I have been done differently. Did not want to tell family, what would they think. Kept it to myself, did not tell anyone, thought that I could fix it. My output at work was starting to be affected as I could not concentrate, always thought about Garrick and how could I fix the problem.

I was not aware of support groups, why should I anyway, Garrick has a problem not me. His behaviour started taking a serious downward spiral. Strange hairstyles, more ear rings, more tattoos, job hoping, not sleeping, or sleeping all day, untidy bedroom to mention a few. Money was vanishing, jewellery was pawned. Had to buy my jewellery back from the pawn shops.

What I did

Spoke to family. Spoke to my boss. Contacted medical aid. Spoke to a Pastor. Convinced him to go to rehab. Made promises to him if he went to rehab, bought an him air ticket to visit my sister in law in America. Paid his debt.

What I did not do

Go to meetings, my wife went alone, just was not interested. When I eventually went to a meeting it was with reluctance and arrogance.

How I was affected

Emotionally drained. Paid for rehabs. Started hiding my things away. Could not sleep. Judged people. Started arguing with my wife. Ignored Garrick. Became a horrible person to live with.

How I changed

Heard about HEAL as my wife started attending Alberton HEALgroup reluctantly, have been attending for the past 6 years. Started listening and sharing. Educated myself on drug addiction, enabling, co dependency. Had family meetings with councillors from South Coast Recovery Centre as well as with Facilitators from HEAL Alberton. Learnt to say NO. Wife and I are on the same page. Handed Garrick over to God. Attend Church regularly because without God in your life you cannot fight addiction on your own.

HEAL has been absolutely phenomenal, the support and guidance received weekly is immense. Wise council has power to guide you on the right path.

Thank you HEAL for being there for me and for showing me the way to God and his overwhelming power.

Hauptfleisch Family, This is my story:
  • On the 16th of January 2011 I attended my first HEAL meeting, as a supporter to my then brand new boyfriend that I had been dating for 2 weeks. It was part of his “terms and conditions” that I joined him at HEAL as I had very limited knowledge about addiction and at the time we met, Nathaniel was already 3 years clean so he knew how crucial his recovery was as well as my involvement in it. I needed to understand the dangers of enabling and becoming co-dependent and what life with an addict was like, even though he was strong in his recovery. I was very sceptical and reluctant but I thought I would see how things go. The amount of knowledge that I gained about addiction, triggers, family dynamics, conflict resolution, relapse prevention and so much more, was absolutely life changing. If it was not for the equipping, education and support that we receive from HEAL, Nathaniel and I would not have been able to cope with the pressures of being in a relationship with a recovering addict. I have subsequently learned so much and almost 6 years later, I am married to the man of my dreams, we have a beautiful little girl and recovery is part of our lives, every single day. Through HEAL we both learned how to walk, and talk recovery. Our weekly HEAL meetings keep us on rock solid grounding, surrounded by accountability and friends, who have become family. We know that HEAL is a massive part of what keeps Nathaniel clean along with a God centred life and family support.

Jeanine Sanders, This is my story:
  • My story starts many years ago when I was 13, I got mixed up with drugs, clubbing etc... I then proceeded to struggle with addiction for the next 18 or so years. My addiction eventually took me to the streets. I had had my kids by then and my life was a complete chaotic mess. I OD on the streets and by God's Grace I am still here today.

I went into long term treatment (4th time) in 2013. The hard work started when I came out into the real world. It has been a tough road but the Lord has taken me out of the darkness and into the light. I have recently moved into my own place with my kids, I have started a successful business and I have the most amazing relationships with my kids, family and new friends. I have made an absolute point that my recovery is life long, and that it's not a destination. In order for me to stay in recovery I am totally committed to HEAL. For me it's a platform of accountability, I am also able to get a wealth of information / advice and continuous support. It also feels good to give back. The HEAL ministry has definitely been a huge part of me staying clean and I 100% believe Gods hand is at work in HEAL and I'm proud to be a part of that.
